Okay, I confess! Kyoto is not having seven art festivals all at once. I thought it might be an interesting way to tie in the annual group show with the smaller show for which I have been selected. It is really confusing this year! My title is not as crazy as you might think. Most of the group is still gathering to display their work at the Annex of the Kyoto municipal art museum. Most are also exhibiting two smaller pieces at the Gallery Keifu (Japanese). The sizes are very unusual: one is 18 cm x 18 cm and the other is 15.7 cm x 45.5 cm (WxH). Those are not standard sizes.

Seven of us have been selected for a smaller show at the Kyoto International Community House: Cake Hara, Yuko Hirata, Sokei Honda, Yumi Inoue, Chikako Kamide, Kantaro Maeda, and Michelle Zacharias (listed in alphabetical order with first name and then family name). Although greetings from the director of the Kyoto art museum are printed on the show’s leaflet, I am not sure if he helped select the artists or not. The variety of work is interesting and includes traditional nihonga, calligraphy, textiles, drawings, paintings, and conceptual installations.

The gallery supposedly has very high ceilings and large walls (9 metres) for us to display large pieces that cannot usually be displayed in conventional galleries in Japan. It will be interesting to see how everything looks together.

The show at the Annex is only open for the weekend, but the show at the Community House will be all week.  I will probably be there on weekdays to keep an eye on things but free on weekends (aside from the dinner party and other festivities on Saturday night for artists and friends) if anybody wants to explore Kyoto together.
