Peek Inside: What should I do?
I have a serious dilemma: the space at the YAD05 is extremely narrow. It is 1.2 m x 2.7 m (width x height). This means that I cannot bring the drawings that I wanted to bring to best express myself to others. I have to bring smaller ones. One single panel disturbs the visual balance. It just does not work. I tried.
I have decided on two feasible options but I am not sure which one is best. Please share your opinions, regardless of how weak or strong they are!
One choice includes a four-panel drawing that I love with signage and some much smaller ones that might or might not be finished by Saturday. Problem? It is a very random selection. The advantages of this four-panel drawing over a single panel of the same total size is that it will be easier to carry or pack and that it compositionally works better with the smaller ones since the four panels are staggered. There is no solid rectangle weighing dragging everything down.
Another option would be drawings that have a stronger visual connection or theme. Problems? The wall space would be completely filled without any space for the wee ones or a sign. The sign would have to go on the floor, but that does not bother me too much. I plan on colouring with crayons on the floor anyways. Also, it might more attraction if it was on the floor. It is nothing fancy; I used my new crayons to colour it. (By the way, the photo is upside down, but I couldn’t get a wide enough angle from the other side. the studio is also quite narrow.)
So, what do you think?
If I decide to do something like this again, I will prepare better with bags printed with my drawings, get TWO stalls instead of one, and probably many other things. This year I was stressing myself out too much by putting pressure on myself to produce more work when I did not have to worry about that. I need to focus on having fun, meeting people, and perhaps getting information on where to have a solo show. I also need to put together a portfolio either this week or early next year. I have never needed one before, aside from when we used slides way back when. I have to remember not to stress myself out about these things. I also noticed that the sheet that I had adapted to use as my carrying case was missing. I must remember to ask the Kyoto organizers about it and to check my boxes more carefully next time if I cannot be there to pack them. Live and learn, right?
I noticed I like all the ones with the stronger colors. Maybe you need less white space if you use the less intense colors in between. Of these two options, I prefer the top. It has greater dynamics to my mind.
oops! I picked the stronger theme and will have the smaller ones on hand but on the wall. Have to pack them for shipping ahead of time.
I can always change my mind of the day with what I decide to put up on the actual wall, too.
